Genesis Our roots run deep into the ancient, catholic Ecclesia Anglicana--a Church that is nearly as old as Christianity itself. It was Anglicans who established the first permanent English colony in our land at Jamestown in Virginia exactly 400 years ago this year. Here in Hawaii, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma invited the Church of England to their realm in 1862, granting land for the construction of church buildings, schools and a hospital.
Mission Holy Cross Mission itself is very young. It was on the National Day of Prayer decreed by President Bush: Holy Cross Day, September 14, 2001 that Fr. Lawrence B. Wheeler felt a call to establish an orthodox Anglican parish here in Honolulu. Fr. Wheeler had done his seminary studies in the old imperial capital of Kyoto, Japan and was rector of an Anglican/Episcopal parish in the Japan Alps of Nagano for several years. He founded our mission as a small congregation of Japanese-speaking Christians here in Hawaii in solidarity with the traditional Anglicans of Japan who objected to the feministic innovation of ordaining women. Some Episcopalians offended by recent actions of the church leadership and keen to keep the orthodox faith have contacted Fr. Wheeler at times over the years. They got together and held their first Holy Communion service in English on January 21, 2007.
Catholic The faith of Holy Cross is catholic in the sense that we hold to what the world-wide Church has always believed, the sine qua non of which is summed up in the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral of 1886, 1888: The two testaments of Holy Scripture (Old & New) "as being the rule and ultimate standard of faith", the two ancient creeds (Apostles' & Nicene) "as the sufficient statement of the Christian faith", the two sacraments (Baptism & Lord's Supper) "ordained by Christ Himself", and the historic episcopate (bishops in apostolic succession, along with their priests & deacons). Unlike the modernized Episcopal Church, we take these standards of our Faith seriously. |
