Genesis Our roots run deep into the ancient, catholic Ecclesia Anglicana--the Church in England that is nearly as old as Christianity itself. It was Anglicans who established the first permanent English colony in the Americas at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. Here in Hawaii, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma invited the Church of England to their realm in 1862, granting land for the construction of church buildings, schools and a hospital.
Mission Holy Cross Mission itself is very young. On the National Day of Prayer decreed by President Bush: Holy Cross Day, September 14, 2001, Fr. Lawrence B. Wheeler felt a call to establish an orthodox Anglican parish here in Honolulu. Fr. Wheeler had done his seminary studies in the old imperial capital of Kyoto, Japan, was ordained the Nippon Seikokai and was rector of an Anglican/Episcopal parish in the Japan Alps of Nagano for several years. Holy Cross started as a Japanese-language mission in October 2001. We have been an English-speaking congregation since January 2007.
Catholic The faith of Holy Cross has always been "catholic" in the minimalist sense that we hold to what the world-wide Church has always believed, the sine qua non of which is summed up in the
Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral of 1886-1888.
1. The two testaments of Holy Scripture (Old & New) "as being the
rule and ultimate standard of faith",
2. The two ancient creeds (Apostles' & Nicene) "as the sufficient statement of the Christian faith", 3. The two sacraments (Baptism & Lord's Supper) "ordained by Christ Himself", and, 4. The historic episcopate (bishops in apostolic succession from the apostles, along with their priests & deacons).
Apostolic Constitution His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, promulgated the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus in November 2009. This generous framework makes a way for traditional Anglicans like us to come into full communion with the Catholic Church. On September 19, 2010, the day that the pope beatified the famous Anglican convert, Cardinal John Henry Newman, Holy Cross petitioned that we be received into the Catholic Church under the provisions of the apostolic constitution.
